Winter 2003-2004:
The first census (ever!) of the region has finally come to its conclusion. Results are to follow… In order to plan any health programs, be it vaccinations or child health, the population demography must be known.

The midwife also started work on the first of October. In December, a dispensary technician from the National Services Secretariat has also started working at the health center. Welcome!

During November & December 2003, the health committee has been visiting the six surrounding communities to build rapport and to learn about prevalent concerns. During these visits, community inhabitants voiced concern mainly about the weak educational infrastructure and lack of water sources. For this reason, we are now planning future projects to improve education in the region, to organize a cooperative of local farmers, and to develop other micro-economic initiatives in the communities. We are in the process of building a cistern to provide consistent water supply to the health center, after which we will focus on water supply to the communities.

In December, the health committee, together with fhn staff, have built a small farm for the health center, with yams, oranges, and plantain. Members of the health committee have also requested funding for bicycles, in order to facilitate cooperation between themselves and the communities. Increased ability to travel with also faciliate HIV/AIDS education activities, which are being led by members of the health committee as well.
